Street Beats

I titled my project "Street Beats" because it is composed of various sounds, harmonies and rhythms of Marshall Street.
I decided to use Marshall Street for this project because it's a big attraction and it brings diversity to campus. I thought I would be able to collect unique audio clips using this concept and I think the result was fairly successful. In this assignment we were required to record 6 different tracks that included ambiance, background, bass, repetition, harmony and melody. Since ambiance is considered to be the "general noise" or "air" of an environment I recorded sounds like cars passing the distance, birds chirping, and a person biking by. The next track is background noise, which is kind of self explanatory. For this track I recorded voice variations, people having casual conversations with one another as they walked along Marshall Street. The next part of the project was a bass track, for this I recorded sounds of car, truck and bus engines as they chugged by to their various destinations. Next came repetition, for this track I recorded the sounds of footsteps. Someone was wearing flip-flops and the noise they created as they clicked down the street was very distinctive. The following track is and example of middle ground, kind of a secondary sound, it gives the environment character without giving it away. The final track is foreground or sound that tells the listener something specific about the environment. For my middle ground track I recorded sounds of people browsing through clothes hangers at J. Michaels.
I decided upon this idea because I thought that it would give the listener the insight that the track was being recorded in a store without making it too obvious. The final track is foreground, which more or less reveals the true environment. For this track I recorded people placing orders at Dunkin' Donuts. I thought it gave a distinguishable character to the environment. I found that the concepts and skills that I learned the imovie project that we completed earlier in the year were easily applied to this assignment. I found myself putting a lot of consideration into how I framed the images that I used for my blog, At what angle will this photo be most successful? And how much can I crop out of the photo before it loses meaning? These are just a few of the questions I found myself considering before I took each picture. I found learning the meaning of different sound terms to be very important as well. Many of the terms are close in definition but still have some slight differentiation and if you're not careful to pay attention you can easily end up confusing them. The concept that I found to be the important to master was use of the equipment. The mini disk has so many different features and it's very easy to run into complications. I found myself having trouble moving onto a new track after having just recorded another. However after reading the instructions and playing around with the mini disk for a while it was easy to get the hang of. I had my doubts about how this project would turn out but after listening to the final result I was very surprised as to just how much character you can capture about a place or environment through sound alone.
